A day out in Portimão

Although the Algarve is known for its beaches, golf courses, and its main popular tourist resorts, there is so much more to this part of the Western Algarve than just these activities.

During my week's stay, I caught the local bus to Portimão, which I guess is the regional administrative centre for this part of Portugal.

Traditionally a centre for shipbuilding, sardine fishing and fish processing, Portimão is a thriving town with a raft of things to see, from the waterfront walkway by the Arade River and the Museu du Portmao to Nossa Senhora Da Conceição and the new marina.

Dating back to the 12th century Portimão's Old Town is scattered with beautiful churches and cobblestone walls. Narrow, winding alleyways and ornate, old buildings are filled with bustling shops and outdoor cafes serving local seafood, making the Old Town perfect for strolling around all day.

You may even see the occasional crane nesting precariously on top of a chimney overlooking the town.
