Air New Zealand Flight NZ29 – Boeing 789-9
Houston (IAH) to Auckland (AUK)
14 hours 30 mins – 7500 miles approx.
After a 6-hour stopover in Houston Airport, I then boarded the night flight to New Zealand, which because of crossing the international Dateline meant that I gained a day, or should I say lost a day. I left Houston on the Tuesday and arrived in New Zealand on the Thursday! Not quite sure what happened to Wednesday!
After the pleasure of the Singapore Airlines flight from Manchester, the Air New Zealand had a lot to live up to and, whilst it wasn’t the worst flight I have ever had, it also wasn’t the best flight either. It’s just a draining long trip after over 19 hours since leaving home, so tolerance levels are never going to be high.
This flight was on one of the fleet of new Air New Zealand Dreamliner planes and was fully booked with no spare seats at all. The individual seating areas in Economy Class were nowhere near as spacious (or as comfortable) as Singapore Airlines and the food was what I call typical bland airline food, which was pretty unexciting but filled a gap.
Patchy sleep as I struggle to sleep sat upright and just a really long flight which dragged, making me think that next time I will seriously consider breaking the journey up rather than doing the whole Manchester to Auckland trip in one bash.
