Is Napier just the Art Deco capital of the world or is there more to the place?

Originally it was my plan to visit Hawkes Bay back in 2023 on my last visit to NZ, however the Cyclone that hit NZ in February that year put paid to my visit.

So here we are, 12 months later, in perfect weather and off to Hawkes Bay at long last.

I have always been impressed by art deco design so nowhere better to see it in practice in everyday working life but in Napier, the so-called Art Deco capital of the world.

No doubt about it, the 1930's architecture that came about as a result of a massive earthquate (and subsequent fire) in 1931 led to a dramatic and unique vision for the town, which is still very evident today.

This weekend, there is the town's annual Art Deco Festival, a global event, which showcases the town off to the world with visitors flocking to Napier for a unique experience and trip back in time.

And out come all the vintage cars too, which adds a cetain panache to the whole event.

But there is much more to Napier than just Art Deco, as I found out during my stay.

Developing areas, such as Ahiriri, have blossomed in recent times, alongside the Port of Napier, and the many geographical attractions such as Bluff Hill, Colonial Gardens and Napier South.

I really enjoyed my visit to this part of Hawkes Bay and would gladly revisit the area again. Certainly one of the more unique areas to be found in the North Island of New Zealand.
