Rotorua: Misunderstood or what?

Writer's picture: Solo TravellerSolo Traveller

Before I made my first of three visits to Rotorua on this trip, I wasn't sure whether it was a place that would appeal to me. It has something of a bad rep in terms of the pungent sulphur smell from the many hot pools, whilst it also has some serious social issues following Government action during COVID.

If you talk to anyone, Rotorua is like Marmite, its divides opinions!

So here goes...this is my take on the place.

I found it a curiously interesting place, with a balance between the old traditional town (and its heritage) and the modern changes that are gradually being introduced, such as the waterfront development. Culturally it's very different, again with many varying nationalities around. Its very unlike any other place I visited in NZ this time, offering much diversity.

It seems to have a plethora of bars and eateries - 'Eat Street' for example - whilst its location is well serviced by transport links from all areas, via road, intercity bus and even through its own regional airport.

It also has eight lakes - yes 8! - and a redwood forest that is absolutely amazing (especially at night), whilst the hot pools are plentiful and everywhere. Copious amount of tourist accommodation is available as well, especially on Fenton Street.

As for the so called smell.

Maybe I hit the place at the right time but on each of my visits the smell was ok, never over powering at all. Added a certain charm to the area and a reminder of what is below the ground!

My view...go visit and enjoy as there is so much to do there.
